P308. Parent–adolescent agreement regarding emotional and behavioral symptoms among adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease and population-based controls

Aims: To assess parent–adolescent agreement on emotional and behavioral symptoms in adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and their population-based controls.

Materials and Methods: A questionnaire-based postal survey was accomplished on Finnish adolescents aged 10–18 years with IBD (n = 156) and on controls (n = 229). Parental Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) and Youth Self-Report (YSR) were utilized to measure parent- and self-reports on emotional and behavioral symptoms.

Results: Parents and adolescents in IBD group reported similar frequencies of adolescents scoring over the subclinical cut-off point on most scales of CBCL/YSR. On the scale of Somatic Complaints and Emotional Symptoms, however, the parents (p < 0.01), and on the scales of Behavioral Symptoms (p = 0.069) and Social Problems (p = 0.064) the adolescents reported higher frequencies. Contrary, in most scales control adolescents scored themselves in the subclinical/clinical range significantly more often than did their parents. In both groups, parent–adolescent agreement on emotional and behavioural symptoms was poor to low. In patients, the agreement was higher on the scale of Emotional (κ = 0.34) than Behavioral (κ = 0.15) Symptoms. Contrary, in controls the agreement on Behavioral Symptoms (κ = 0.33) was higher than on Emotional Symptoms (κ = 0.24). The difference between parent–adolescent agreement was non-significant between the groups.

Conclusion: Parents and adolescents often disagreed on emotional and behavioural symptoms of adolescents in both groups. In patients, more subclinical/clinical cases were recognized by the parent report. In controls, parents often did not know about their adolescents' symptoms. Thus, the findings emphasize the importance of both informants, the adolescents and the parent, in recognizing the emotional and behavioral symptoms in adolescents.
