P340. Differences in demographic data and disease extension in patients with ulcerative colitis associated with primary sclerosing cholangitis

Background: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is more commonly a disease of adults, typically presenting during the 4th and 5th decades. Looking at the phenotype of IBD, PSC is more often seen in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). Patients with PSC associated UC are more likely to have extensive disease than those without PSC.

Aim: To investigate demographic data and disease extension in patients with UC and PSC-UC.

Methods: Data from 17 PSC-UC patients first evaluated in our tertiary center between 2005 and 2010 were collected and compared to 40 UC patients without PSC, matched for age and gender.

Results: 17 PSC-UC patients (7 F and 10 M) had the average age of PSC onset of 29.0 y (10–58 y) and UC onset of 24.4 y (11–43 y). In the group of UC only, 40 UC patients (21 F and 19 M), the average age of onset was 36.3 y (12–65 y). There is significant statistical difference in age of UC onset between studied groups. Patients with PSC-UC developed UC earlier (P = 0.0012, DF = 55, 95% CI = −18.8206 to −4.9059). Further sub-analysis combining age and gender showed that significant difference was present only in males (P = 0.0335, DF = 27, 95% CI = −19.5705 to −0.8611). Comparing the disease extension of UC (backwash ileitis + extensive colitis/extensive colitis/left sided colitis/proctitis) at first presentation we couldn't find any differences between two groups. Statistical significance couldn't be determined for patients with backwash ileitis due to small numbers (5 pts) but it is of interest that all of them had PSC.

Conclusion: Patients with earlier onset of UC and patients with backwash ileitis are more likely to develop PSC, although we couldn't find statistical significance supporting last statement probably due to small number of patients. Prospective analysis is mandatory.
