The 17th Congress of ECCO in numbers

5,892 delegates attended the 17th Congress of ECCO Virtual

The 17th Congress of ECCO Virtual – Inflammatory Bowel Diseases 2022, held on February 16-19, 2022, attracted a total number of 5,892 delegates from 103 different countries. Since the inaugural ECCO Congress in 2006 in Amsterdam, at which there were 350 delegates, participant numbers have steadily increased, as shown in the graph below. Despite the COVID-19 outbreak in the beginning of 2020, we are happy that this high number of delegates had the chance to participate in the ECCO’22 Virtual Congress.

The pie chart below divides delegate attendance at the 17th Congress of ECCO Virtual by continent. Approximately 68% of all participants came from Europe and about 32% from outside of Europe.

The pie chart below illustrates the professions represented at the 17th Congress of ECCO. The majority of participants were Physicians (40%), followed by representatives from Industy (15%) and Endoscopists (11%). Other attendees included clinical researchers (6%) and IBD Nurses (5%), Fellows/Trainees (4%), Scientists (3%) along with surgeons, pharmacists (2% each), and paediatricians (1%). Students, Dietitians, Research Nurses, Radiologists and Psychologists represented approx. 3.2% of all delegates.

     High-quality Abstracts                                   

A key component of the success of the ECCO Congress is the rising number of high-quality abstracts accepted for oral, digital oral and poster presentations. An outline of the evolution of abstract submissions is displayed here:

     Industry exhibition                                   

This year´s virtual exhibition attracted 15 pharmaceutical companies which were represented with 17 virtual exhibition booths. All together 20 companies were represented with a satellite symposium, exhibition booth and through sponsorship.
